The Ghan expeditions occurred between 1870 and 1920, when thousands of camels and approximately 4000 cameleers arrived at Australian ports to create an indispensable network of camel routes which spread out across the harsh terrain of Australia’s inland areas. In this desert-like environment, other hardy cargo animals like horses and buffaloes could not survive. Only the trusty camel could travel long distances loaded with precious cargo and it required strong, experienced men to handle these large animals. These men were brought into the country from the regions of Afghanistan and soon became known as “Ghans”.

The Ghan expeditions were instrumental in transporting construction materials, carrying essential water to drought ravaged areas and even transporting mail to far flung places.

Aussie Trains pays tribute to the brave pioneers who took on the perilous task of opening up the inland route from the top of the continent in Darwin all the way down to Adelaide in the south. Our The Ghan expedition packages are curated in such a way that today’s Australians can experience the history of the famous railway line while enjoying the stunning achievements the country has made along the way.
