The Ghan’s History
The Ghan railway line began in the late 1800s. Work on a narrow gauge line began towards Darwin and from there, the railway grew. After 38 years of hard work and many financial setbacks, the Great Northern Railway (as it was called at the time), just made its way to Alice Springs. The impact of this new line was immense! It opened up the Australian Outback, which allowed supplies to arrive at remote outposts within days, rather than weeks and months.
The Ghan train was finally named after the pioneering cameleers who blazed a permanent trail into the Red Centre more than 150 years ago. The original Ghan line followed the route of explorer John MacDougall Stuart.
