5 Tips for First Time Train Holiday Travellers in Australia

Aussie Trains has been helping Australian travellers to plan their ideal train holidays since 1993. In this blog, we give first time travellers our 5 best tips for getting the most from your train holidays Australia wide.

Tip 1: The Right Clothing to Pack on Train Holidays

We’re frequently asked what clothing you should bring on your train holidays in Australia. We recommend that you bring comfortable walking shoes, a hat, sunscreen, and something warm to wear, even in summer! In some parts of Australia, evening temperatures can cool significantly.

Some train holidays boast off-train evening experiences, such as dinner under the stars in Mangari (The Ghan train) or an evening of stargazing in Rawlinna (the Indian Pacific). The dress code on our trains is smart casual. You may choose to dress up a little more if you plan to mingle in our Platinum Club or Outback Lounge. For the exploration component of your holiday, you should prioritise practicality and comfort.

Tip 2: Don’t Plan to do Anything but Enjoy the Holiday

There’s so much to see on train holidays that you won’t want to miss a second! If you were thinking of bringing your laptop to keep up with work emails, you may be out of luck. Network connection on some journeys, particularly through central Australia, can be patchy, or non-existent. You’ll get the most enjoyment from your holiday if you leave those distractions behind and enjoy all the amazing experiences that luxury train travel has to offer.

Tip 3: Bring a Friend, or Reach Out to Make New Ones

Some experiences are better shared. If you have a friend that you would like to come with you on your holiday, all the better. If you are travelling alone, consider mingling with some of the other passengers in our Outback Lounge or Platinum Club and make new friends to share your experience with. There may also be a few seasoned travellers or regulars on your trip, happy to give you the “inside scoop” about the experiences on or off-board.

Tip 4: Consider Extending Your Holiday with a Package from Aussie Trains

Before deciding on your holiday, consider having a chat with our friendly travel experts at Aussie Trains about an extended package deal for your holiday. Package deals represent great value for their inclusions and offer more amazing off-train experiences for you to try. With so many packages for train holidays Australia wide, you can plan your itinerary so that you stay longer in the places that you wish to visit the most.

Tip 5: The Staff is There to Help

Finally, reach out to the on-board staff on the train if you have any questions or require any assistance. They are always happy to help and answer any questions you may have about your Australian train holiday.
